The Names and Titles of Jesus
Lesson 5
This prophetic passage is regarding the birth of Christ and His future millennial reign on earth. The background of this prophecy is a message given to Isaiah in a vision foretelling the destruction and restoration of Jerusalem and Judah. Isaiah was writing 700 years before Christ.
This chapter describes what is going to happen to the nation during Isaiah’s day and what will happen to the nation in the future. We must understand that the prophets were forth tellers as well as foretellers, and that every message of prophecy in the Word of God had definite implications in the time in which the people lived and in the future. God had Isaiah share a message of hope for the wonderful future of the Jewish nation to encourage them in the midst of their difficult times.
“For unto us” is a prophecy of the Virgin Birth by Isaiah made 700 years before Christ was born. The work of Christ on the Cross was in the future for these people but applied retroactively to those who believed in Christ for salvation in the Old Testament (the remnant according to grace). The wording and description of this child/son is an unmistakable prophecy of Jesus (Christ’s first coming). The government will rest on His shoulders is an obvious reference to the eternal reign of Christ (His second coming), with a specific reference to His millennial reign on earth.
Wonderful Counselor
These words indicate the kind of character this coming Son would possess. The Hebrew word wonderful in this passage is “pele,” which means marvelous, miraculous, or incomprehensible. This uniquely born child (born in a miraculous way) will be called Jesus and He will be a wonderful counselor.
Jesus demonstrated wonderfulness in various ways the first time He came to earth, beginning with the Virgin Birth (Matthew 1:23), by His power to heal the sick and raise the dead, by His teachings, by living a sinless life, and by His resurrection from the dead. Jesus taught things that were contrary to the human viewpoint thinking like, “Blessed are those who mourn.” (Matthew 5:4) “Rejoice and be glad in persecution.” (Matthew 5:11-12) “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” (Luke 6:27) The second time Jesus comes to earth it will be to destroy His enemies and bring an everlasting peace to His people (believers).
The second part of the Messiah’s title is the word counselor. The Hebrew word for counselor is “yawats,” meaning to advise, deliberate, or resolve. Isaiah 28:29 describes Jehovah (Jesus Christ) as the Lord of the Armies Who has wonderful counsel and great wisdom. In Jesus was “hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” (Colossians 2:3) During the battle of Armageddon, Jesus will demonstrate His counsel and wisdom as He protects His people and guides them to safety. Jesus will resolve the conflict between the Antichrist and believers by destroying those Who oppose Him.
Mighty God
The Hebrew word for mighty is “gibbor,” meaning powerful, strong, champion, or valiant. Israel thought the Messiah would come as a brave and powerful leader ruling over the armies of God like no other one before Him. Deuteronomy 10:17, “For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, Who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.”
The Jews were looking for a heroic figure like King David who would deliver them from Roman oppression through military conquests and political might. But the nation of Israel missed the passages that described the Messiah as a suffering Savior coming to deliver them from the penalty of sin. (Isaiah 53) The Mighty God of Israel will be seen at the Second Coming when He comes with mighty power. (Matthew 24:30)
Jesus Christ will come again to earth “with power and great glory.” (Matthew 24:30) When Jesus returns at the Second Coming, Isaiah’s vision of a Mighty God and King will be fulfilled. As Mighty God, Jesus will judge all the people of the earth. (Revelation 18:8, 10) Then He will sit on His eternal throne and reign in great power and authority. (Revelation 11:15-17; 12:10)
Everlasting Father
The Hebrew phrase “Everlasting Father” means “Father of Eternity.” Isaiah 9:7, “Of the greatness of His government and peace there will be no end.” This phrase is not a reference to the Trinity, but a concept. Rulers in ancient times were considered fathers of their country. The “father of the nation” was viewed in much the same way as the father of a family. It was the father who was to protect and provide for his children. In the same way, Christ will become a king Who will be a father to the children of Israel in the Millennium. He will protect and provide for them, as they are gathered into the “land of promise” once again. (Isaiah 5:26-30, 10:19-23, 11:11-16, 14:1-3; 60:4-6, 65:19; Joel 2:16ff; Zechariah 8:20-23, 10:6-12)
Prince of Peace
During the Millennium there will be peace on earth because Christ will be on earth ruling and reigning for 1000 years. There will be universal peace in the Millennium, according to Psalm 46:9, Isaiah 2:4, Hosea 2:18, and Micah 4:3. There will be universal prosperity in the Millenium, according to Psalm 72:7, 16. There will be universal knowledge of God, according to Isaiah 11:9; Jeremiah 31:31-34; Hebrews 8:14, 10:15-17. There will be longevity in the human race, according to Isaiah 65:20. There will be perfect health, according to Isaiah 35:3-6, 65:20, and Jeremiah 30:17. There will be a perfect world government under the leadership of Christ and the delegation of authority to the Church Age believers to rule nations, according to Isaiah 11:1-2; Zechariah 14:9; 2 Timothy 2:12; Revelation 2:25-28, 3:21, 5:10, 20:4,6. All these characteristics of the Millennium demonstrate that the Prince of Peace is ruling and reigning!!!
