The Names and Titles of Jesus — Lesson 13
The Bright Morning Star
The title Bright Morning Star is a reference to a new day dawning. The Tribulation will have been completed, Satan and his followers will have been cast into the Lake of Fire for all eternity, and new heavens and earth will have been created. A new era will begin where our Savior, the King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus Christ will be glorified, forevermore.
The Resurrection and the Life
God’s plan called for Jesus Christ to become a human being, live a sinless life, die on the Cross to pay the penalty for the sins of the world, and be raised from the dead after three days, all in fulfillment of prophecy. (Job 19:25-26 – 1520 B.C.; Psalms 16:9-10 – 1000 B.C.; John 2:19-22 – 26 A.D.) The resurrection of Jesus Christ is definitive proof that He is the Son of God, and that physical death has been conquered. For those of us who place our trust in Him, He guarantees us a resurrection as well. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is the same power that will raise all believers from the dead at the Rapture of the Church. This same power also enables us to fulfill God’s plan for our lives.
Because of the Resurrection, believers have hope (confident expectation) of their own resurrection at the Rapture. Just as the death of a believer is the Lord’s victory, so the resurrection of believers is the Lord’s victory. The resurrection of believers is the wise and sovereign decision of God. This means that a believer’s volition and individual merit are not factors in the resurrection of the Church. The Resurrection of Christ and of all believers is strictly God’s victory. We have no control over the manner or time of our resurrection. It is completely a matter of the sovereignty of God. The Rapture however can occur at any time because no prophecy must be fulfilled before it happens. The time of the Rapture and our resurrection is God’s decision. It is not based on our decision or our desire. In the meantime, we are to live every day “as unto the Lord.” Just as we do not know when we are going to die, we do not know when the Rapture will occur. Therefore, the Rapture is not subject to man’s timetable or man’s speculation.
The ultimate victory for the Royal Family of God is the resurrection of the Church which is guaranteed by the resurrection of Christ. Resurrection is a complete divine victory. There will be no death in the eternal state. Death is abolished with the possession of a resurrection body. Our resurrection body will be an eternal memorial to the grace of God. This is the true meaning of the resurrection of Jesus Christ for believers!
The Resurrection is far greater than we can imagine. The Resurrection gives believers hope for the future and power for the present. With a personal sense of destiny, believers are free to live their Christian lives with a relaxed mental attitude, knowing that their eternal destination is secure in Christ. At the resurrection of the Church, God will make no distinction between those who have failed to live their Christian lives and those who succeeded in living it. All believers are resurrected. The time of the resurrection of the Church is God’s perfect decision.
God’s life (eternal life) is credited to us at the moment of salvation. This imputation of eternal life occurs simultaneously with the imputation of the human spirit. Though we possess eternal life the very moment we trust Christ as Savior, we do not fully experience it until we enter the eternal state. Eternal life has more to do with eternity than life on earth and it is the life of God that creates the capacity to receive and appreciate eternal rewards. Since it is God Who gives eternal life to believers, it is a matter of His grace. Therefore, eternal life is not deserved, nor can it be earned. This means that anyone who has believed in Christ for salvation (regardless of their current spiritual status) possesses eternal life. It also means that believers are secure in Christ forever. (John 5:25-26; 11:25-26; 14:6; I John 5:11-13)
Another result of the gift of eternal life to believers is the guarantee of a resurrection body. Theologically, we call this Ultimate Sanctification, and it will occur at the Rapture of the Church. This resurrection body is said to be like that of Christ’s resurrection body. This means believers will no longer possess a sin nature, and therefore they are no longer able to produce human good. In our resurrection bodies, we will be able to produce only divine good. The gift of eternal life assures believers of an eternal relationship with God. (Philippians 3:21; I Thessalonians 4:13-17; I Corinthians 15:51-57; I John 3:2)
Advocate
The Greek word for advocate is “parakletos,” which means called to one’s aid, or legal counsel/defense attorney.
Jesus is our Advocate with the Father. God’s righteous law pronounces us guilty and condemned, being born spiritually dead. This means we have come short of God’s standard of the righteousness necessary to have eternal life. (Romans 1:21-23, 3:23, 6:23) Spiritual death means separation from God for all eternity in the Lake of Fire (Hell). (Revelation 14:10; 21:8) Jesus was our Advocate on the Cross, when He paid the penalty for our sin and we are no longer condemned to the Lake of Fire. (Romans 8:1) And He remains our Advocate in this life. Our Advocate stands before the Father and pleads our case when we commit personal sin. (I John 1:5-10) Because we are believers in Christ, our sins are forgiven based on Jesus’ payment for our sin on the Cross.
